Wild Thoughts: Merry Christmas and Happy New Years (December, 2023 Newletter)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!

As the year draws to a close and Christmas approaches, it’s time to take a moment to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished and the wonderful memories we’ve created. The holidays are a time for family, friends, and loved ones to come together to celebrate and create memories that will last a lifetime.I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.While we all face challenges throughout the year, the holidays provide the perfect opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you’re staying at home or traveling to visit family and friends, take some time to relax and enjoy each other’s company.As you enjoy the holiday season, remember the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. Take a moment to be thankful for all that we have, to help those in need, and most importantly to take an opportunity to pause and give thanks for the love, hope and joy found in Jesus – our Savior.I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Wildlife, Nature, and Landscape Photography Workshops

For the past few years, I’ve been fortunate to travel to amazing places and photograph some incredible wildlife, nature, and landscapes.

During my travels, I’ve seen some beautiful places, but most importantly, I’ve met some amazing people. One the most rewarding parts of travel and photography is the friendships I’ve made along the way.

While out in the great outdoors, photography sometimes runs a distant second to all the experiences and laughs shared with new friends - and the laughs are always plentiful.  Therefore, the entrepreneur in me says it’s time to start leading photography tours and workshops, so that others can share in these experiences.

For the past year, I’ve been working on putting together some wildlife and nature photography workshops along with some educational offerings, all while planning some new and unique trips, its been a busy time.

In early 2024, I’ll be announcing some dates and other information for workshops around Louisiana, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and other exciting places.

In the future, if you decide that you’ll do a workshop with me, I can promise you that:

· you’ll get to experience some amazing locations;

· you'll meet and work beside some like-minded people who love the outdoors and photography;

· you'll take some pictures of which you are incredibly proud;

· you'll learn from an experienced wildlife/nature photographer;

· you’ll always be with small groups;

· you'll experience an incredible vacation;

· and you’ll laugh... A LOT.

In addition to you getting some great photos, one of my main goals is for everyone who arrives as strangers to leave as friends.

I hope you’ll join me. Stay tuned.

Quick Tips on Outdoor Photography

If you’re a photographer who enjoys outdoor shoots, then the golden and blue hours are your best friends. These are the hours after sunrise and before sunset, as well as the hour before sunrise and after sunset, respectively. Both of these time periods provide a unique lighting that is perfect for portraits, landscapes, and long exposure photos. During the golden hour, the lighting is soft and gives off a warmer color temperature. The blue hour is the hour before sunrise and the hour after sunset. This time of day is a favorite among landscape photographers as the blue hue present in their shots creates a relaxing and almost dreamy effect. Long exposure photos also take advantage of this time as they use slower shutter speeds. If you’re shooting outdoors, take advantage of the golden and blue hours for truly unique photos. With the right settings and a bit of creativity, you can create stunning and memorable shots.

Quick Tip - Don't be Afraid to Shoot Against the Sun

 As a wildlife photographer, shooting against the sun is an incredibly powerful tool in your arsenal. When done correctly, shooting against the sun can create dramatic images that are truly captivating.

When shooting against the sun, the backlit rim lighting effect can be used to create a stunning halo around the subject. This effect is particularly effective if the animal you’re shooting has fur or a lot of hair, as the light will create a captivating contrast between the light and dark areas of the photograph. For an even more dramatic effect, aim for a 45 to 90 degree angle as this will create shadows that further emphasize the subject.Overall, shooting against the sun is a great way to create dramatic images that will truly captivate your viewers. Whether you’re shooting in Yellowstone or your local wildlife park, don’t be afraid to take a risk and shoot against the sun. With the right technique, you’ll have the perfect conditions to create stunning photographs.
