Wild Thoughts: The Magic of a Winter Sunset

As I sat on the edge of the lake, the cold winter wind whipped against my face, making my cheeks rosy and my nose tingle. Despite the cold weather, I couldn't resist the urge to get outdoors and photograph the sunset. There's something about the winter sunset that draws me in, with its vivid colors and soft texture like clouds.

As I looked out at the calm waters of Lake Pontchartrain, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and calm wash over me. The water was still, reflecting the colors of the sky in tiny ripples. It was as if the sky was Gods's canvas and the fiery sunset was His masterpiece.

Winter sunsets are different from those in other seasons. There's a certain crispness and clarity to the colors, almost as if they are more vivid against the stark contrast of the surrounding landscapes. The sun descends slowly, casting a warm glow over the landscape, as if it's trying to hold on to the day just a little longer.

As the colors deepened and the sky turned into a canvas of fiery oranges and blues, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty that God created. It reminded me that even in the coldest and darkest of times, there is still beauty and hope to be found. The winter season may be cold and dreary, but it also brings with it a sense of stillness and reflection, a chance to slow down and appreciate the little things in life.

As the sun finally disappeared below the horizon, the sky turned a deep shade of navy blue and dark red, and the stars began to twinkle in the cold winter sky. I pulled my coat tighter around me, grateful for the warmth it provided. I sat there for a while longer, just taking in the peaceful atmosphere and feeling grateful for the moment.

As I made my way back home, I couldn't help but think about how blessed I am to be able regularly witnessed the beauty of nature. In our busy lives, we often forget to take a moment to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. But moments like these, sitting on the cold lakeside and watching the sunset, remind us to slow down and be present in the moment.

In a way, winter sunsets are like a metaphor for life. Just like the cold and darkness of winter, we all face challenges and struggles in our lives. But just as the sunset brings a burst of color and warmth to the cold winter sky, our hardships lead us to appreciate the good times even more and make us stronger.

So, next time you have the chance, I urge you to take a moment to sit, watch and enjoy the sunset on a cold winter day. Let the calmness of the winter and the beauty of the sky wash over you, and remember to appreciate the little things in life. Because sometimes, all it takes is a cold winter day and a stunning sunset to remind us of the beauty that surrounds us.

2024 Wildlife, Nature, and Landscape Photography Workshops and Private Wildlife/Nature Photography Classes

For the past few years, I’ve been fortunate to travel to amazing places and photograph some incredible wildlife, nature, and landscapes.

During my travels, I’ve seen some beautiful places, but most importantly, I’ve met some amazing people. One the most rewarding parts of travel and photography is the friendships I’ve made along the way.

While out in the great outdoors, photography sometimes runs a distant second to all the experiences and laughs shared with new friends - and the laughs are always plentiful.  Therefore, the entrepreneur in me says it’s time to start leading photography tours and workshops, so that others can share in these experiences.

For the past year, I’ve been working on putting together some wildlife and nature photography workshops, private classes, and some educational offerings, all while planning some new and unique trips, its been a busy time.

In the future, if you decide that you’ll do a workshop with me, I can promise you that:

· you’ll get to experience some amazing locations;

· you'll meet and work beside some like-minded people who love the outdoors and photography;

· you'll take some pictures of which you are incredibly proud;

· you'll learn from an experienced wildlife/nature photographer;

· you’ll always be with small groups;

· you'll experience an incredible vacation;

· and you’ll laugh... A LOT.

In addition to you getting some great photos, one of my main goals is for everyone who arrives as strangers to leave as friends.

Dates for photo workshops/tours can be found below.

Registration will go live on Feb 1, 2024

I hope you’ll join me.

Quick Tips on Outdoor Photography:

Don't be afraid to get out on those cold winter evenings to photograph sunsets.

The winter season brings with it sunsets that are truly mesmerizing. This spectacular display of colors is made possible by the laws of science. In the colder months, the air is drier and cleaner, allowing for the most pure and vivid hues to adorn the skies in the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding this phenomenon requires a basic knowledge of the interaction between sunlight and air. The same process responsible for the blue daytime sky is responsible for the captivating colors we see in sunsets. Known as Rayleigh scattering, this process occurs when sunlight hits air molecules. As sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow, each color corresponds to a different wavelength that is visible to us. However, due to Rayleigh scattering, these wavelengths are not always equally visible. The shorter wavelengths, like blue and violet, are scattered more by air molecules and are thus more prominent during the day. In contrast, the longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, can travel further and are thus more visible during sunsets. As the sun sets lower on the horizon, the longer wavelengths have to travel a greater distance to reach our eyes, resulting in the striking red and orange hues we often see.

But what makes winter sunsets even more breathtaking? It's the colder air that is typically less humid, meaning there is less moisture for the tiny particles in the air to absorb. This leads to less scattering of light and thus more intense and vibrant colors. Moreover, the air during winter is usually cleaner, coming from the less polluted Arctic region, adding to the intensity of the sunset colors. So next time you witness a spellbinding winter sunset, remember that it's not just magic, it's the wonders of science unfolding before your eyes.

Quick Tip for Wildlife Photography- Use Weather to Your Advantage

 My perspective has shifted to the belief that weather is generally insignificant, or more accurately, that it can actually be advantageous. When capturing images of large antlered animals such as moose, elk, or deer, it is often preferable to do so on an overcast day. However, photographing birds or incorporating the sky into an image on a dreary, winter overcast day could result in unsatisfactory outcomes. It is important not to shy away from going out in light rain or snow as you never know what you may capture. In fact, I have witnessed incredible lighting and skies the day after a major storm. Always remain prepared and adaptable, as there are no strict rules. View different weather conditions as opportunities for photography, rather than excuses to stay indoors.
