The air hums with the melodic calls of a chorus of whistling ducks, their unique whistles a constant backdrop to the tranquil beauty of Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. This haven for birds and other wildlife in southeastern Louisiana offers photographers a chance to capture the magic of South Louisiana nature in its raw, unspoiled form.
It's been a while since I last visited, but I’ve recently started exploring the reserve again, and am eager to rediscover and photograph the wildlife and natural beauty that make this reserve so special.
Few people know that my journey into wildlife photography began a few years ago with photographing the graceful egrets that flocked to Big Branch to roost each evening. Though they've since moved on, a new cast of characters has taken their place – the lively whistling ducks, who now call the reserve home.
Here are some tips and insights for photographers seeking to capture the beauty of Big Branch:
The Whistling Stars: So far this summer the whistling ducks are undoubtedly the stars of the show. These gregarious birds, with their striking black and white plumage, gather in large flocks, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The best time to catch them in action is during the early morning and late evening hours, when they are most active. To capture their unique calls, consider using telephoto lens and fast exposure to freeze their movements and capture their detail. You can also use a slower exposure to blur the movement and create a sense of motion.
Beyond the Whistlers: Big Branch offers so much more than just whistling ducks. The diverse ecosystem supports a thriving population of other avian species, such as graceful wood ducks, a variety of herons, red-winged black birds (one of the most underrated birds to photography in my opinion), osprey, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife as well, including alligators basking in the sun and the elusive river otters playing in the water.
Finding the Perfect Shot: The refuge offers various observation points and hiking trails, each with its unique charm. The boardwalk offers a close-up view of the marsh, while the trails lead you through the varied habitats, providing opportunities to capture diverse subjects. Patience is key. Take your time, observe the wildlife, and wait for the perfect moment to capture the essence of their behavior.
Light & Composition: As with any wildlife photography, understanding light is crucial. The golden hour, just after sunrise and before sunset, offers a warm, diffused light that enhances the colors and textures of the subject. Pay attention to the composition, framing your shots to create visually appealing images.
Respecting the Wildlife: Remember, you are a visitor in the wildlife's home. Observe quietly and from a distance, respecting their space and natural behavior. Avoid making sudden movements or loud noises, and always put the well-being of the wildlife first.
