Moments of Perfection
The summer heat is relentless, and fall temperatures are still a few months away for us here in Louisiana. The air is heavy and humid as I run through the trails in Fontainebleau State Park, trying to train for a few ultramarathons and the 2024 Spartan Death Race in Pittsfield, Vermont. While I’m sweating and toeing the line between dehydration and heat exhaustion my cameras are sitting in the cool air conditioning of home, but the time on the trails training gives me a chance to clear my head and plan the next location to photograph.
With blurred vision and burning eyes from being drenched in sweat, something in the distance catches my attention. As I wipe the burning sweat from my eyes I see a beautiful deer gracefully jumping over a log. Its fur was a rich brown shade with white spots speckled all over its back. It looked up at me with big, curious eyes before darting off into the trees. There was a time that I would have been frustrated with myself for not having my camera with me, but now I enjoy these moments and thank God for allowing me to see so many amazing things. Moments like this always remind me of the time I missed a perfect shot of an otter looking up at me from the marsh. The wet fur on its face glistening in the sunlight while the rest of it's body was hidden in the dark shadows, and just as I got the camera in focus the otter disappeared. After not getting that shot, an old barefoot lady walking through the woods told me "don't be upset, that was a moment God wanted to share with you and no one else. Those words echo in my mind now every time I miss a shot.
Whether it’s a deer leaping over a log, an alligator peering up from the water hyacinths (such as the one in the below), a prairie dog peering up from its burrow, an elk standing backed by the mountains, or a sunset over a lake, they are all made with God’s perfection. I believe that, ultimately, photography is a way we can capture that perfection. Whether it’s wildlife photography, landscape photography, nature photography, or any other type of photography, the ultimate goal is to point the camera at the things that inspire us and capture the moment of perfection that God gives us.
